Interior paneled walls have nearly always been decorated. Originally, hardwood paneling was used as a means to seal a room from cold drafts, but almost immediately became showcase for craftsmanship, with artistic expression reaching its peak in the 18th century.

Most species are available with both plain-sawn and quarter-sawn cuts, in clear, select and character grades. Some species are not graded, such as pecky cypress, wormy chestnut or wormy maple. Due to the growth habits of some species, not all species are available in plank-width flooring/paneling or beams. Wood is God's handiwork. No two boards are ever exactly alike. Therefore, actual material appearance, graining, and coloring may vary from these images.
